Dark Souls + Game of Thrones = The new game from Software
of reading - words
Several sources spread the word of a collaboration between From Software (the developer of Dark Souls, Sekiro and Bloodborne) and G.R.R. Martin (the author of the Game of Thrones books).
THE SOURCES :
Since last year, we already knew that From Software was preparing two new games. The boss of the company, Hidetaka Miyazaki, had revealed in an interview that they would have a "From Softwaresque" style. We're already sure that the dark fantasy atmosphere and gameplay of the previous episodes will return. We could have Bloodborne 2 and the game with G.R.R. Martin... A few months ago, rumors about the partnership between the author and From Software started on social networks. In the last few days, they've come true with two publications. The first is the one by G.R.R. Martin. In a farewell post to the series on his blog, he talks about his current and future projects, and mentions a consultation for a Japanese video game. We don't have more details, but it's already suspicious. The second one is from Gematsu, where they pass on information they get from someone close to From Software. Pretty reliable, then.
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE GAME ITSELF :
As far as the game itself is concerned, it would be an action RPG published by Bandai Namco to create a new license. We would be in an open-world to ride through, made up of several kingdoms. Three character classes would be available, with Dark Souls gameplay elements such as multiplayer, invasions and co-op. When the leader of a realm is killed, his abilities will be recovered. G.R.R. Martin would take care of the entire scenario, and while we're pretty sure it's going to be a medieval world, it won't necessarily be the Game of Thrones world. Rumour has it that the universe is based on Nordic mythology, hence the name "Project Rune" that was given to it internally. The new internal name is "GR", possibly for "Great Rune". The game is developed on Unreal Engine 4, and not on From Software technology. According to Gematsu, we will have official answers during the Microsoft conference at E3 2020.
Seeing an author known for his intransigence get closer to a studio famous for its demanding productions seems like a perfect marriage. Especially since George R.R. Martin can help From Software on a point that many criticize: his games are too cryptic because of their convoluted narration. Great Rune could be From Software's most ambitious game.
Questioned by Numerama, Bandai Namco indicated that he did not answer "rumors or speculation".
With this project on top of it, one wonders if George R.R. Martin will find the time to finish writing Game of Thrones...
